Meyer Glossary: Every Term You Will Hear at the Table
Meyer has its own small vocabulary, some of it from Danish and Norwegian table talk. Here is every term you are likely to meet, in MeyerLive3D or at a real table, with a short explanation.
The dice
- Reading
- A roll is read as a two-digit number with the higher die first: a 3 and a 5 is "53". Pairs are read as pairs ("a pair of 4s", or "44").
- Meyer (21)
- A 2 and a 1. The highest roll in the game.
- Little Meyer (31)
- A 3 and a 1. Second only to Meyer. Danish: Lille Meyer.
- Pair
- Both dice the same. Every pair beats every ordinary roll; a pair of 6s is the best of them.
- Ordinary roll
- Any roll that is not a pair, Meyer or Little Meyer: 32, 41, 42 … up to 65.
- 32
- The lowest roll in the game. Any claim beats it.
The turn
- Roller
- The player whose turn it is to shake the cup.
- Peek
- The roller's secret look at the dice. In MeyerLive3D, the second tap on the cup; only the roller's screen shows the values.
- Claim
- What the roller says they rolled. True or false, it must beat the previous claim.
- Decider (the challenged)
- The next player, who must believe or lift.
- Believe
- Accept the claim without looking, take the cup, roll, and announce something strictly higher.
- Lift
- Reveal the dice. If they are at least as good as the claim, the lifter loses a life; if not, the claimer does.
- Reveal
- The moment after a lift when everyone sees the true roll.
Tactics
- Floor
- The claim the next announcement must beat. It rises every time a claim is believed.
- Ladder
- The sequence of rising claims in a round. The higher it gets, the harder it is to climb honestly.
- Bluff
- A claim higher than the real roll.
- Under-claim
- A claim lower than the real roll. Always safe if lifted; often used to make a strong roll look ordinary.
- Blind pass
- Announcing a claim without peeking. In MeyerLive3D a blind claim must still beat the floor, and the next player sees that it was blind.
- Tell
- Anything that gives a bluffer away: a pause, a glance, a habit.
The game
- Lives
- Each player starts with six, shown in MeyerLive3D as a die on their seat. Losing a round costs one.
- Round
- Everything from the first roll to the lift. The loser of a round starts the next.
- Loser
- Meyer has no single winner: the game ends when one player has lost all their lives.
- Table code
- The short code that identifies a MeyerLive3D table. Share it and friends can join in seconds.
- Suspended
- A player whose connection dropped. Their seat is held while they reconnect; it is not a penalty.
